DENTAL HEALTH IN PREGNANCY

DENTAL HEALTH IN PREGNANCY

Dental health during pregnancy: risks for mothers

The saying "Each pregnancy costs a tooth" is no longer valid from a medical standpoint for a long time. In fact, earlier pregnancies were associated with the loss of teeth, because pregnant women are particularly vulnerable because of hormonal exceptional situation for dental disease.

The pregnancy hormones have effects on the gums and the saliva, in addition frequently changing eating habits: The increased appetite for Sweet and sour certain nutritional errors creep in. If then also added false or poor oral hygiene, the preconditions for a disease are created.

But even for the healthy development of the child, the gingivitis can become a danger in particular. Consistent preventive measures to complications during pregnancy can be avoided. We therefore advise you as soon as possible after you learn of your pregnancy to make an appointment in your care dental office.

Gingivitis: gingivitis, periodontitis

The hormonally induced gingivitis occur in the majority of pregnant women. Causes are the bacterial plaque and the temporarily changed from the pregnancy hormones gum, which is susceptible to inflammation. Here, a mostly existing gingivitis is enhanced.

What exactly happens? The hormones cause the body that expand the vessels, the organs are supplied with blood by more and loosens the connective tissue. This also applies to the oral mucosa, which causes the gums becomes more permeable and the harmful bacteria as well as their toxic metabolites (toxins) pass this barrier more easily. The body responds with inflammation at the intruders and increased gingival bleeding is the result. Often then a vicious cycle is set in motion: The teeth are cleaned less for fear of bleeding gums, which colonize even more bacteria.

The extent of gingivitis can be very different and also depends on the pre-existing conditions that already exist. The transitions are fluid of mild gingival swelling, the bleeding increased (gingivitis), through to massive, all the teeth in question periodontal inflammation (periodontitis). In rare cases, the gums also proliferate.

Studies show that the risk of suffering a premature baby or bring an underweight child, in women who are suffering from periodontitis, sevenfold is increased: The chronic gingivitis arrive continuously endogenous and bacterial inflammatory substances in the blood stream, can trigger premature labor. Through good oral hygiene and possibly a gum treatment can prevent these complications.

Our recommendation against gingivitis

Brush also and especially the bleeding areas to determine the cause of bleeding - eliminate - the bacterial plaque. Especially important is the daily care of the interdental spaces.

Brushing despite nausea: The cleaning of the posterior teeth (especially in the maxilla) may cause especially in early pregnancy a nausea. Try anyway to brush carefully and not possible on an empty stomach. Use a children's toothbrush - or even better - a Einbüschelzahnbürste. With the very small brush head, you can clean each tooth individually even without toothpaste and not do encounter such a big toothbrush against the mucous membranes in the throat or tongue against the posterior region whereby a nausea would be triggered.
